Upper limb Motor Rehabilitation Integrated with Video Games Focusing on Training fingers' Fine movements

چکیده
Several rehabilitation robots for upper limbs have been introduced so far, and their clinical effectiveness has been reported in many studies on recovery of motor abilities in the aged or poststroke patients. These studies, however, found little evidence of improving the functional abilities of patients. Moreover, it has been identified that the main problem of robot-assisted stroke rehabilitation is the lack of motivating and versatile robot-assisted exercises. In this article, we discuss the development of a novel upper limb rehabilitation robot integrated with video games. Our solution is operated via a novel human–computer interface, which stimulates shoulder, elbow movements, and fine finger movements. It is capable to train patients with partially recovered motor control ability. The interface enables therapists to select motivating and engaging motor training exercises represented as video games and specify rehabilitation exercises for patients using a grasping and upper limb interface. The paper presents concept of this novel interface, discusses the implementation issues and demonstrates technical and practical feasibility of our concept through a number of application

Evaluating the Microsoft Kinect for use in upper extremity rehabilitation following stroke as a commercial off the shelf gaming system
Motion controlled video games have been shown to have a positive effect for physical rehabilitation on the upper extremity in stroke survivors when combined with conventional physical therapy. While much research in this area has worked with bespoke systems and games, some research has been done into using commercial off the shelf gaming systems (COTS) for use in upper extremity stroke rehabili...

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the combination of CIMT and BIM training with CIMT in Fine Motor Skills of Children with Hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Methods: 24 children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy aged between 60 and 120 months participated in this RCT study. They were randomly assigned into CIMT and BIM training (n=12, four males, eight females mean age±standard deviation=93.58±1...
متن کاملEffects of Task Related Training and Hand Dominance on Upper Limb Motor Function in Subjects with Stroke
Objetives: Recovery of upper limb motor function in stroke is limited. Different approaches are used to improve the upper limb function, but none has satisfactory results. The present study investigated the effect of task related training and role of hand dominance in upper limb motor function rehabilitation in stroke population. Methods: A convenient sample of 32 subjects divided into 4 gro...
متن کاملThe use and effect of video game design theory in the creation of game-based systems for upper limb stroke rehabilitation
Upper limb exercise is often neglected during post-stroke rehabilitation. Video games have been shown to be useful in providing environments in which patients can practise repetitive, functionally meaningful movements, and in inducing neuroplasticity. The design of video games is often focused upon a number of fundamental principles, such as reward, goals, challenge and the concept of meaningfu...
متن کاملUsing Virtual Reality to Transfer Motor Skill Knowledge from One Hand to Another
As far as acquiring motor skills is concerned, training by voluntary physical movement is superior to all other forms of training (e.g. training by observation or passive movement of trainee's hands by a robotic device). This obviously presents a major challenge in the rehabilitation of a paretic limb since voluntary control of physical movement is limited. Here, we describe a novel training sc...
